During the course, we spell out essential ideas in a non-mathematical way, relate them to formal mathematical descriptions, and engage in class room experiments and computer simulations (in R) to become (more) familiar with probability and statistics.
The specific concepts we deal with are random variables, probability functions and their moments, marginal and conditional probabilities, the data generation process, descriptive statistics, inductive statistics, and basic asymptotic theory in form of the law of large numbers and central limit theorems.
Contenus pédagogiques
Objectifs:
Empirical research uses data to gain insights into the world we live in. Probability theory and statistics have proven to be extremely useful in this regard. While probability theory is used to conceptualize processes in the real world that lead to uncertain outcomes, statistics summarizes these outcomes in a useful way. However, the application of these tools can also be very frustrating due to their mathematical formalism, which causes a steep learning curve.
This course is an introduction, or a review, of the basics of probability and statistics. The aim is to clear the fog that math creates to navigate empirical research.
